Study Task 8: Rationale

What is your theme?

"How colour effects narrative in comics"

How are you exploring it visually (methodology)?

By creating a set of characters, I will make a comic that utilises colour to portray the mood of the scene, rather than words.

Why are you doing it this way?

I hope to strengthen my own practice, researching and learning the methodologies behind colour usage, then applying them to effectively take in the lessons. I also wish to find out wether existing theories prove to work in practice/ elicit the same response for all, or if the rules and connotation of colour changes for others.

Materials?

I dont really wand to restrict myself in this sense, but feel like watercolour will be my primary method, having a large palette to my disposal and the ability to mix colours being big advantages as a bi product. Also with the ease of use and large array of swatches, digital will be utilised often.

Any key theorists who have influenced this?

Vassily Kandinsky as one of the godfathers of colour theory. Josette Baujot, Frank Miller and Jason latour, with their existing works within actual comics, each uses colour for very different purposes, offering a scope of ideas and applications to learn from.
