Colour and form experimentations

I wanted to see how using different shapes of objects that stir known emotional responses (spider- fear, dogs- love/ fear, babies- love/ annoyance), and see if colouring them would cause people to see them in a different way.

With these images, I got some really interesting responses, things were said that I wouldnt have expected in a million years. Because of this I decided to make representations of how the group saw them, fascinated by my results:

Asking for the nicest, most positive looking image of the baby, I got a resounding response of blue and white. This I expected, with the colours being quite light and airy, It's a pleasant combo. For the bad combination though, I got red and black. This was expected, but the group describing the baby as demonic caught me off guard. For something so unassuming and innocent as a baby to be labelled as that really interests me. I understand that the combinations are usually associated with the occult, but jeez.

All the dogs were perceived to be scary or evil which surprised me. I specifically chose the pitbull, a breed that naturally has a connotation of being violent to anybody who watches the news and has never came accross one before, and assumed that there would be somebody who would see good in the dog. The matching colours do sit in awkward positions from each other on the colour wheel though, so this could be the reason for the reaction.

Spiders this time, and I expected the result of the dogs to apply for these examples. This wasnt the case though, having a clear distinction between a nicer spider and an evil\ bad one.

Some responses that really threw me, I didn't expect any of the babies to be labelled as "demonic" for example. If anything I thought that some would naturally apply this to the others, but not the baby. This to me just goes to show how much the use of colour can impact imagery. This is a really nice starting point for the project, and Im excited to see what comes next.
