I wanted to understand the process
behind self publishing and some reasons as to why one would choose that route.
Luckily for me, the author of my previous Bleeding cool research happens to
have self published a comic, and made a handy article expressing his opinions:
- Image comics works as a close mainstream
version of publishing “Image comics only publishes creator owned material”
- “Diamond distribution takes a 60% cut of the
money your book makes - in comparison, Kickstarter takes 5% with a 3-5%
payment processing fee”
- “Yearly, the entire comic book industry makes
less than a superhero movie does in a month”
Whilst the article turned out to be
more of a motivational piece, the information comparing the take of diamond and
Kickstarter is huge! I honestly am thrown by the difference, I understand that
working through diamond takes away a lot of the big stress’ found with self
publishing, and that they already have substantial gateways to exposure and
getting your work out there, but I’d have a hard time believing that it would
be 60% less Intake worth it. I should make a fake Kickstarter for the comic that I am creating. This will force me to consider the work that goes in to these projects, and would by extension allow me to at least understand if the 60% sacrifice would be worth it.
