Discuss the role illustration can play during periods of political and/ or social upheaval
For this task, i will be quoting from the book "Deconstructing Disney", by E. Byrne and M. McQuillan. Chosen as i have a genuine interest in the subject matter.
Tone of voice
Persuasive, informative, biassed
5 Key points and quotes the text makes
Early on, the book lets you know what it thinks of the disney standard, saying that the company portrays a specific ideology for a lifestyle based on the American standard. The book understands that, being aimed towards a younger audience, the films can leave an impression on the youth, causing them to follow a path that may not be the right lifestyle for them, and alienate those that are different. It is with this i understand the tone of voice and purpose of the book, they want to scrutinise disney for sending the wrong messages to their impressionable audience.
Here the writers point out that, having such a renown reputation as 'the' family entertainment, the company almost has political immunity. This has came from their position during times of political unrest, one specific example being a Donald Duck animation, called the "Fuhers face". This was pretty much a propaganda piece, as Donald has a nightmare about working under the Nazi regime, satirising the german lifestyle and also the races that were affiliated with Germany during the war (a nazi group consisting of a japanese stereotype, and rather camp german soldiers.) Having Donald wake from the dream and exclaim how proud he was to live in the USA. Id assume that having the company prepared to create such works, the government is prepared to allow the company to push their own agendas.
Disney has been given this image of a great man reigning over a company, with the viewers best interest at heart, when this is simply not the case. Disney is a company, looking to gain money, doing what it can to do so.
