So the article itself only really
concerns itself with information given by IDW media, who are among the top four
comic publishers. It stands out because it concerns the sales of both physical
and digital comics. I wanted to find which of the two are more viable/ popular
currently. Here’s what I gathered:
- “ The huge growth we saw in digital sales in
the early days of ebooks flatlined from early 2015, to 2016. Its still a
significant revenue stream” - Ted Adams, CEO of IDW.
- Digital sales are measured at that of 11.5% of
physical.
- Some digital vendors are ceasing to be, an
example of one given is ‘Scrubd’
- The author notes that there is a bigger
library for physical comics, not everything has been transferred
digitally, lacking a lot of classic ‘gold and silver age’ comics
I had an idea that the interest in digital
comics had fallen, but not quite so drastically. The author made a note that
the phenomena had been given a name “screen fatigue”. I need to look in to
that, see if it’s a thing. In response to the drastic difference between the
sales of physical and digital, I do wonder if this would change, having more
comics that use the digital interface in a different way. Maybe a growth could
occur with new techniques and fresh talent the likes of SUTU. Digital vendors
being stopped is somewhat reminiscent of Marvel AR, the big companies seem to
be failing with online approaches. They fall out of touch with that and I worry
that’s it for them, we’re advancing in to an ever more technology dependant
world.
