Ghibli as a studio reminds me of the
sentiments of Moebius previously discussed. Moebius saw the importance in his
use of colour, which in turn was a way of letting his ideals and personality
shine through the work. Ghibli, being a very successful modern studio, chose to
shun modern technologies from their works. Only utilising them when they need
to. This in turn makes everything personal for them. Here is a rare example of
their using 3D animation, showcasing their ability, yet they still only use it
lightly.
“Do everything by hand, even when using
the computer”
Using a computer allows for shortcuts
and can dull the handmade personality in projects when incorporated lazily. For
the spokesperson/ leader of ghibli, Hayo Miyazaki, this simply won't do,
everything must be personal, be it hand drawn animation worked on by him,
scripts generated by him, he even has gone as far as to write lyrics to the
soundtracks for his movies. Ghibli is especially interesting when placed in to
my project, because it goes against my ideals, it is important to understand
how and why people want to avoid new advancements, and in this case I totally
understand.
