Doberman: A colour walkthrough

So Iv'e had an easter break, away from the computer, glued to my cop sketchbook, giving me the opportunity to crack out the comic.

So within this time, I was able to come up with a narrative for the comic, a sort of deal, gone wrong through the eyes of the dog. The dogs owners would be sat around, waiting for something, as the mood sours. Suddenly theres a knock at the door, bringing the antagonists in to the scene, and from there the situation continuously gets heated, injuring one of the characters, with the others leaving the scene. This simple layout offered me the chance to display a few of the colour combinations to hopefully portray the right feelings and emotions for each scene. I'll cover the pages that switch colours up.

The comic starts without colour, only the dogs owner consists of a colour , reflecting the dogs opinion on him. Blue a calm colour. I also previously stated that blue is somewhat of a melancholic colour for me , which could mean the use of colour hints at a unfortunate fate for the character.

Pink is then introduced, with a much paler application of pigment. I did this in the hopes that it would convey that the dog is somewhat familiar with the person, but not fully sure on what opinion to form on him. Outside of the colour choice I had him introduced by petting the dog, another indication that he is on it's side.

Both characters sit to chat and the mood sours. I wanted to show that there was worry in the air, using the purple and green combo that i found with my colour and emotion test.

The scans don't portray it very well, but the two colours intensify as the worry grows, having the characters dwelling on their situation. This suddenly transitions on to an orange wash as the door knocks. Im not sure I made the right choice here to be honest, the hostility that the orange is supposed to convey wouldnt necessarily show until the other characters arrive, the worry colours should have really intensified at this point instead.

From this appears the antagonists, with their menacing demeanor, i felt it would be appropriate for the dog to come to an opinion on them, giving them their colour. Im glad I switched the colours for the characters, the yellow really makes him stand out as the leader of the group.

The characters have a conversation, leading to the situation being sorted out and the mood lightening. With that the violent in your face oranges of the scene fade.

Having got his way, yellow asks one of his lackeys to shoot blue. This sends the dog in to a fit of rage, engulfing the scene in red. Further scenes have the dog attacking the antagonists, using the same colour scheme to portray the anger of the dog and violence of the moment.

Reacting to the gunshot, the scene is fully blue/ grey, showing the remorse and worry of the dog. The addition of the red outline is to indicate the pain of the character, a blood red surrounding to the wounded character.

To tail it all off, when the scenario has finished, hopefully the idea of blue connoting the dogs owner is cemented, with a blue ambulance rushing away. Hopefully the use of colour communicates this to the viewer.
