A number of authors have considered the application of advertising in the modern age. Kalman (1998), Adbustersa (2000) and Garland (1964) have all commented upon the fact that graphic design is being used for the wrong reasons and can be more than it currently is achieving. For instance adbusters writing in their account of advertising describes how they

‘Propose a reversal of priorities in favour of more useful, lasting and democratic forms of communication – a mind shift away from product marketing and toward the exploration and production of a new kind of meaning.

This is an interesting suggestion, meaning that designers need not restrict themselves to advertising and working for others, they suggest a moral chance to use your talents for good reasons.
